Horse country

Ten towns across two states and three counties. They are not interchangeable, and the differences between them are mostly about land, trails and how far you are willing to drive.
01

Bedford

Westchester County, NY

Bedford is where most conversations about Westchester horse property start. Riding here is organized around a marked trail network that crosses private land by easement, maintained by an association rather than the town, which is why the land pattern has held the way it has.

The Bedford Riding Lanes Association maintains a marked trail system across private land in the Bedford area, with trail maps for members. bedfordridinglanes.org

02

North Salem

Westchester County, NY

North Salem is the most consistently equestrian town in the county. Properties tend toward working acreage rather than manicured grounds, and the trail system runs across the state line into Ridgefield.

The North Salem Bridle Trails Association states it maintains and develops a historic system of more than one hundred miles of trails in North Salem, NY and Ridgefield, CT. nsbta.org

03

Pound Ridge

Westchester County, NY

Wooded, quiet, and bordered by the county's largest park. Pound Ridge suits buyers who want privacy and terrain more than open pasture, and the reservation next door puts a large trail system within hacking distance of parts of town.

Ward Pound Ridge Reservation, at Routes 35 and 121 South in Cross River, lists horseback riding among the permitted activities on its trail system. parks.westchestercountyny.gov

04

Katonah and Lewisboro

Westchester County, NY

Katonah gives you a real village and a train station; Lewisboro, next door, gives you the land. Buyers who want a barn without giving up walkable errands tend to end up looking at both.

The Lewisboro Horsemen's Association is a volunteer-run organization supporting the local equestrian community and runs a hunter pace. lhatrails.org

05

Armonk

Westchester County, NY

The shortest drive to the city of the northern Westchester horse towns, and the one that reads least rural. Land here is more likely to come as a few acres than as a farm, which suits people who keep one or two horses at home and board the rest.

06

Chappaqua

Westchester County, NY

Chappaqua is a village-and-schools town first. Horse property exists on its edges rather than at its center, and buyers here are usually weighing commute and community against how much land they actually need.

07

Greenwich

Fairfield County, CT

Backcountry Greenwich is a different market from the rest of the town and behaves like one. Its trail system is old, privately maintained, and one of the reasons large parcels have stayed intact this close to the city.

The Greenwich Riding and Trails Association maintains a historic trail system across private properties, town roads, open spaces and public parks, and manages the 94-acre Nichols Nature Preserve. thegrta.org

08

New Canaan

Fairfield County, CT

New Canaan holds onto its riding culture through institutions as much as through land. Buyers moving from Westchester often look here once they price the difference in Connecticut taxes, and I am licensed on both sides of the line.

The New Canaan Mounted Troop, founded in 1939 at 22 Carter Street, runs riding lessons within a horsemanship program plus adaptive riding and equine-assisted services. newcanaanmountedtroop.org

09

Ridgefield

Fairfield County, CT

Ridgefield shares its trail network with North Salem, so the two towns often come up in the same search. It tends to offer more land for the money than the towns closer to the Merritt.

The North Salem Bridle Trails Association's trail system spans North Salem, NY and Ridgefield, CT. nsbta.org

10

Millbrook

Dutchess County, NY

Further north, and a genuinely agricultural landscape rather than a suburban one. Millbrook is where buyers go when the horses come first and the commute is occasional.

The Millbrook Hunt, founded in 1907 in northeast Dutchess County, describes trail rides and land preservation work with local farmers and landowners. themillbrookhunt.com
